I watched a part of that online. It sounds like that was the last event on the books for Canoe House.

They said as long as they get 50-60 guests for dinner, they can keep the restaurant open. But due to union rules, the hotel couldn't reopen without mainland tourists coming in. While there's some kama'ainna that would visit, it wouldn't be enough to warrant the minimum staffing levels that the union requires.

I suppose it's more economical for the resorts to stay shuttered than to even open up a tower or floor or two to accommodate locals with cash to spend.

The carrying costs of keeping the Four Seasons at Hualalai, the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and the HGVC Kings Land there but closed have to be incredible. Just the electric bill (or property tax bill) have to be outrageous.
