Which card is it? My guess would be if your card is the Surpass you would need to cancel the card as the status is inherently linked to the card. If it is the Amex Plat, you could contact Amex and see if they can unenroll you from the Hilton benefit. Not sure if any other card provides that status.
Any data point of this happening before? I think I got it from my AMEX Platinum.
