A flight attendant in French Polynesia has tested positive for Covid-19 - the second infection recorded in three days.The government said the Air Tahiti Nui staff member tested positive during a routine scan yesterday.

The person has been placed in isolation.

A month ago, Air Tahiti Nui resumed regular flights to France and in mid-July it added Los Angeles to its network coinciding with the lifting of quarantine requirements for people landing in Tahiti.

The coronavirus outbreak, which is concentrated on Tahiti, has slowed its progression as measures, such as a curfew, appear to become effective. The outbreak hit Tahiti Nui TV which was forced to cancel its news programmes for the first time ever. All but 62 cases were detected after the borders were reopened in July and mandatory quarantine requirements were abolished.

    Tourism is set to suffer a sharp decline in French Polynesia as the territory is about to close the border in response to the latest French government decision aimed at slowing the Covid-19 pandemic.

    At the weekend, France suspended all travel from and to non-European Union destinations except in urgent cases, with the ban being extended to Tahiti on 3 February. The French High Commission in Tahiti said in difference to earlier French lockdowns, this time French Polynesia's tourism sector would no longer be granted an exemption. It also said tourists still in Tahiti were allowed to leave as their travel home was being considered as a reason for an exemption.

    French Polynesia's Covid-19 death toll has risen to 133 as the border closed again on Thursday and the vaccination programme continued in earnest. Cases had reached 18,145 on Wednesday with 24 new ones over the previous day. More than 18,000 infections and all deaths have been registered since the territory re-opened to tourism in July.

    The border has now closed again in another attempt to contain the virus. During the preceding lockdown, French Polynesia recorded 62 infections and eliminated the virus.

    French Polynesia's president Edouard Fritch says he hopes last week's border closure ordered by Paris because of the Covid-19 pandemic won't exceed three months

    Travel to and from Tahiti has been restricted to compelling cases only, which now excludes tourism - a key pillar of French Polynesia's economy. Fritch said after another three months, it wouldn't be mutant viruses that kill but the economic crisis, unemployment and bankruptcies.

    After abolishing quarantine requirements in July, the French Polynesian government will introduce a mandatory 14-day quarantine from Tuesday (Tahiti time/Wed NZ time). Travellers allowed to enter will have to pay for their stay in a quarantine hotel unless they have obtained approval from the French High Commission to go to an isolated place at home.

The French Territory has 63 known active cases with nine people in hospital including two in intensive care.
