Day 2: Karera Falls, Germans' Gorge and the Mugara Hot Springs.

Gitega main street RN2 to Bujumbura.

Gitega main street with Melchior Ndadaye Monument, from the room balcony.

Helena Hotel entrance.

Christ the King Cathedral.

Monument of Archbishop Joachim Ruhuna, who was brutally murdered in 1996 by a group of armed men near Gitega.

Pope John Paul II visited here September 5, 1990 as part of his tour of several African countries.

Martin Luther King American Corner Gitega.

By donating them here, it was a good opportunity to give a second life to many recent magazines collected in various airport lounges!

The gardens are really nice.

This fortin, much better preserved than the Germans' Gorge in Nyakazu even though its crenellated walls are dirty over time, was built in 1912. Its construction was to be made to the resident Erich von Langenn-Steinkeller. As it's still used as prison, no one can visit it.

Up to these natural attractions now.

Ruling party CNDD-FDD stele at the dirt track junction.

Entrance toll gate: a compulsory pleasant guide escort to the site.

Karera Falls is actually about 4 waterfalls, all beautiful. Go prepared with sturdy shoes as reaching one requires a steep set of uneven stairs, but worth it.

Amabungo (diffrent from the mabungo fruit) means passion fruits in Kirundi.

A great project to develop ecotourism involving locals. It should be ready to welcome visitors next year.

Another CNDD-FDD column, like in every village and town across the country.

Another gate, another friendly guide.

Posing.

Nyakazu Fault is a massive gorge-like scenery with several hundred metres high cliffs, very close to the border of Tanzania.

Here is found perennnial waterfall with a height over 100 m.

In 1914, at the beginning of the First World War, Nyakazu was a German military post built for controlling the eastern part of the country to Tanzania. There can actually still be found some remainders of a German fortification while fleeing from the Belgian forces.

Nyakazu fault is a site on the Unesco WHS Tentative List.

No other alternative road within a 15km radius.

Even nails can burst the tyres.

Welcome to Kayove cave.

Quite deep like 25m or so apparently. Unfortunately we could not progress very far due to the lack of headlamp. When you will come here, take one with min. 200 lumens as cellphone flashlights don't even provide a quarter of the intensity.

Sugar canes for sale.

A hasty lunch of goat skewers and cold uborobe.

Tallest building is the Pentecostal Church of Kiremba.

Gaudy trash roundabout at Bururi.

The hot springs of Mugara comprise two descending sources that come out the ground in hot gushes to slide down the steep slopes of the rocky site, before forming a true basin far downstream of their course and then continue their itinerary mixed with another source of natural water in the common passage that will channel them to the lake Tanganyika, their last outlet. They form an authentic hot (swimming) pool with 48 degree Celsius, The hot springs have been acknowledged by locals since time immemorial for their therapeutic quality against rheumatism and indigestion. These springs are believed by local people to have healing powers and as such people with different ailments flock to the springs to bathe in the warm water.

On the left hidden by palm trees, a basin exclusively for women.

There are over 10 thermal water sites in Burundi, not all are operational. Mugara hot springs are definitely the most popular thanks to its easy access (from Rumonge as well as Bujumbura), and its facilities that have been upgraded in 2017.

Upmarket resort almost completed.

Entrance fees: foreigners BIF10,000 (€5), locals: Monday to Friday BIF2000, week-end: BIF3000.

One can find a large pool and 2 small pools with cooler waters. The photo makes the pool look dirty – when in fact it is not. The water is a little brown, and it has stained the tiles which is why the photo doesn’t look appealling. The water has no smell, and is fantastic for soaking when it has cooled a little. For hygiene reasons, the water is drained and changed hourly.

Mixed bathing.

Future house roofs from palm trees.

Suite with terrace at Tanganyika Lodge at Rumomge.

No other choice than a suite at BIF30,000 (€14) for the luxury of a bathroom with hot water

Tasty mukeke for dinner while watching diverting AFCON2019 Ghana – Benin game (score 2-2).
