Efficacy aside, moving the testing to security screening would make more sense than doing it at the gate while boarding, IMHO.
If one believes that this would actually screen people out, this approach would stop the pax in question from mixing with the general populace inside the secure zone.
At YVR domestic pier, only AC flies out of the concourse (airside connection to WS side is closed). An AC employee does a temperature check prior to pax going through security. Notwithstanding the theater of all this, IMHO having CATSA handle this is likely the best time/place for this. I'm not really concerned about the mix of general population airside/landside as many people will be in proximity to each other at check-in/baggage drop/elevator/baggage carousel/etc. anyways.
