The thing is that when the FAs come by to collect drink trash they don't even touch it, they just open the bag and you chuck it in. In this case the FA is actually handling something that the pax has touched.
I think this is reasonable. Maybe not necessary, but a reasonable precaution. The lack of drink service, not so much!
