That is how AA has been handling these things. No notice of cancellation, but the cancelled segments disappear from your itinerary, usually leaving a trip that makes no sense. If you want to abandon the trip you are eligible for a full refund, which you can do online. If you still want to go you'll need to call and have AA fix things. Be sure to do your research in advance and have an alternative at hand for them to rebook.
