I posted my views on this in another thread a while back, I followed this strategy about 3 years ago for international travel , fundamentally because of the inconsistent and ever degrading Polaris offering. I agree with you completely, on the tier 1 airlines when in international business I am treated as well and most times better than I am flying on UA and generally spend less money , I am non hub non corporate program captive which also helps.
