Again, really? You do realize there are massive IT systems that govern time-based upgrades. Yes, the decisions these systems make may seem unnecessarily delayed when flight loads are averaging 10%, but do you really expect UA to just turn off these systems and hand out abaci to their IT staff so they can upgrade you a few days early?

As for the upgrade, they are perfectly capable of proactively upgrading, and do when it suits them. No need for an abacus, just a few keystrokes. Now that Kirby can feel his ascendancy is nigh I’m sure he has put out the word to set all systems to maximum deprivation, where they will remain for the foreseeable future.
