I have now changed my ticket for my mother to December.
The helpful agent (absolutely no waiting time with Skywards Gold number in Dubai) took 20 minutes to do the changes, he said December is more expensive, but he'll waive the fare difference. New ticket received, nothing paid, so quite happy with the outcome
As some have mentioned it may be case to case as the wording on their website is vague.
