I had the same case a couple weeks ago and the value of the free night got immediately refunded on my hotels.com account. The free night value as 75 Euros and the booking I cancelled was worth 100 Euros. The 75 Euro free night voucher got refunded immediately, while the 25 Euros paid with my amex are still pending refund.
