Now fastforward to virus - is this still the case - or are cancelled flights now being issued new travelbank credit - even if they were paid with travelbank already expired?
I cancelled (flight was still on but did not want to travel) over phone for a trip that was paid for with now expired travel bank funds. Spent about 2hrs on phone but had no other choice (asked via chat first).
Anyway bottom line, the agent escalated to a supervisor who was able to issue a new travel bank credit with 12month expiry.

After todays DOT statement, I am wondering if I could turn it back into hard cash by booking another trip in the near future and seeing if they cancel it.
