Bank of America was founded in San Francisco as the Bank of Italy in 1904 by Amadeo Giannini. In 1930, it changed its name to Bank of America and eventually grew to be the largest bank in the United States. In 1998, Charlotte based NationsBank bought BofA and adopted the Bank of America name. Since then the bank headquarters have been in North Carolina, not San Francisco.
