On side note if you are using a soft sided ski bag the airlines will typically have you sign a release stating that airline will take no responsibility for damage.
Interesting - I fly with skis in a soft bag on Alaska fairly often and I've never had this happen. (I'm the lowest MVP, so maybe that has something to do with it, but it seems unlikely.)
