Yes, booking base room is fine if you're satisfied with the base level suite. But if you want, for example, Caroline Astor at StR, Corner Suite at W/A, or one of the specialty suites at SGS, you're going to have to pay minimum of 12k THB per night to have any realistic shot at the upgrade to a suite that retails (and sells) for >20k per night.
