I don't recall that one, but there was definitely a NRT-JFK-GRU flight on JAL. It was my second time in international first class (first was AA JFK-GIG), and my first time in a flat bed seat (2x2 coffins in the nose of a 747), circa 2000.
FWIW, JFK is basically on the great circle routing from NRT to GRU. LAX is marginally out of the way.
