Actually in most shops you can ask for a plastic coin at the reception, such coin working in all of these carts. The one I got here in NL works for example in Belgium and France as well. Pretty sure elsewhere also. So no need for cash
This! Many stores (at least the larger ones with a reception) have tokens that they hand out to customers.
