Why is it that NWA's online booking system is so error prone and broken?

My personal example. I'm pricing a last minute fare from LAN-IAD roundtrip for 9/10-9/12. If you look by schedule, nothing shows up, but if you search by price, some flights show up (even today and sooner than 3 hours away), but it doesn't even show you all the available flights on Sunday. There is no possible way to book the combination you need online.

Probably the most frustrating thing, having to pay the $5 to call the airline to schedule a last minute booking. Even more frustrating, paying $5 to book via the phone because their online system doesn't work properly.

I'd go Flyi, but the late flight I want is $110 one way for Sunday.
