If you are taking airtrain from JFK you can also just buy a combined Airtrain/LIRR ticket before you exit the airtrain using the ticket machines.
There are only a few LIRR ticket machines before exiting the AirTrain, they’re different from the metrocard vending machines all along the wall to the right just when you get to the fare gates. The LIRR machines are further to the right, basically you have to turn 180 degrees before the fare gates. You choose the LIRR ticket and then can add a metrocard (it prints onto the back of the ticket) for the value needed to exit the Airtrain.
