I've heard these rumors too, but having been to lounges for BA, QF, QR, CX, LA, MH, UL, IB, AY, JL, RJ (basically all of OW), no one has ever asked me for a physical card or virtual card. BP is all they need.
Outlier edge case was flying FJ (Fiji Airways) 2 weeks ago. Lounge access in NAN they asked me for my physical card to get in.
Lots of caveats there especially since no one can really tell you what OneWorld Connect status means.
However, this was the only time in the last 3+ years flying all over where it mattered, but I was sure glad I had it.
