I like AA and their program, no hatred here. They just need to be smarter. As some posters have pointed out, it is pretty strange for an airline to be punishing people for their credit card bonuses.
Take a look at the Bloomberg piece on December 20. It quotes both AA and Citi people. They are in synch with each other and there is no "cue" to be taken by the one from the other.
AA and Citi have most certainly looked at whether this action will do brand damage which matters.
