You will be bonvoyed which basically means marriott can do what the heck they want and don't give a care. Sorry its the truth. This summer lost my triple nights of 14 nights from September 2018. Reservation made back in spring 2018 under old spg rules when the program stated I'd earn nights for up to three rooms.
Legal? Not sure but Marriott won't care.
