I think the phones have omnidirectional antennas and as long as you're outside with nothing between you and the satellite you should be OK. Geostationary satellites are all in orbit about 22,000 miles over the equator. So if you're in the northern hemisphere you need a clear view of the southern sky. If you're in the southern hemisphere you need a clear view of the northern sky.
