We just booked (separate but identical) mulit-city tickets on Delta.com, the outbound two segments (TATL and intra-Europe) are operated by AF and the return by DL (TATL direct)

We booked premium economy on the outbound and economy on the return. We were both able to select our PE seats for the TATL, and she was able to select a preferred seat on the second flight for free wile booking (No PE on the narrow-body).

I went to complete the same booking and the website wanted to charge me $11 for the preferred seat next to her. I tried it a couple of times with the same results, so continued booking without a seat for that segment.

I then contacted DL on twitter and they said they they are unable to handle AF seat assignments and to use the AF website. On the AF website it also wants to charge me $11, even though AF correctly shows that I am SkyTeam Elite+

Is there a reason a SkyTeam Elite would be given a preferred seat for free during booking while an Elite+ is charged? Should I bother waiting on hold for an AF rep or was her free seat some kind of glitch?
