Direct messaging Aeroplan on Twitter has been great for getting J seats changed on an award booking, but if people wanted another option to try that could be even faster, if your award itinerary has a connecting flight, look up your booking on the connecting flight carrier's website to see if you can select or change your seats there.
I have 2 separate Aeroplan awards involving Croatia Airlines (Air Canada and Croatia on one award, Austrian and Croatia on the other). By using my AE booking reference on the Croatia Airlines website, I can select or change a seat on any of the 4 flights, regardless of the carrier. I didn't need to select my J AC seat as I had done that after I booked the award but the option was there to change it. I selected my J seat for both Croatia flights, and I also selected my J seat for the Austrian flight. I saved the changes and immediately received an email for each booking confirming my flight details and seats chosen. So fast and simple. Hopefully this is where we can get our system to eventually.
I'm not sure what the likelihood of this is further down the road once the Amadeus migration is fully complete, but I hope there comes a time where if you have a multi-flight itinerary and all the carriers use Amadeus, you could receive mobile boarding passes for all the flights in your itinerary when you check-in.
