I’ve always wondered if the odd/even had any meaning! Was hoping it would be something like highway numbers so we could easily tell what direction a flight was generally heading.

SFO-PEK is 888. EWR-PEK is 89. SFO-PVG flights have 857 and 891. LAX-PVG is 198.
I believe 8 is a significant/lucky number for the Chinese, so probably more than coincidence that all of those flights have an 8 in them.
