They don't clear all upgrades 4 days out though. If R=0, upgrades won't clear. They'll wait until the gate, or AC may choose to clear certain people's upgrades in a different order.
But yes, it does suck to buy a very expensive Y fare very close in and get stuck in Y while P25Ks on K fares are in J.
I recall a YVR-YYZ recently (or maybe the other way) that was J9 R0, with
philelite waitlisted, and he cleared, after which the flight was showing J1 R1. That was at least 48 hours before departure. So in that case, they did clear EVERY upgrade, at the expense of future J sales.
Another similar situation with a flight
DrunkCargo booked, except he booked it after they'd done the mass upgrade-before-the-gate sweep. And I think he ended up flying in Y.
