The other option I'd like to investigate is upgrading with miles, but seeing the flying blue miles necessary for the flight itself, I don't have much faith it would be a reasonable option.

It’s been a few years but I’ve gotten 4 op-ups from AF PE to business on flights to/from CDG-Asia. As I recall, 1 was as a DL plat, the others as diamond. So possible, but unlikely.
