I don't know that the 744 aircraft itself was the culprit behind the JFK-LAX delays as much as JFK early evening congestion, particularly on bad weather days. The 789 has seen some equally nasty delays out of JFK, though you might be right that already rare MX delays during the 744 days have gotten even rarer.
