More difficult for who? People flying cheap tickets long distances? I suspect UA talked to a lot of corporate customers who said, "Hey, we've got a lot of employees who are spending a lot of money and not getting benefits in return - what can you do?"
A bunch of current 1K's may drop to Platinum - it isn't the end of the world.
