It's beyond pathetic. Most of the time I can't deal with it until T-24 because most agents aren't able to see (or at least understand) the issue and swear everything is fine. Then, once inside 24 hours I call up to let AA know the issue has finally materialized because I can't check in. Then, I have to fight again because there are still agents who insist that you can't check in online ahead of time with a BXP1 (that used to be the case, but is no longer true). I just keep HUCA until I get an agent who realizes he/she needs to force the re-issue.
Three HUCA and the agents all stick to the company line that they don't reissue the BXP1 upgraded tickets. In my case it shows I'm in a seat in Business, but still have the offer to upgrade to "First" for cash. Maybe I'm paranoid from reading all the Flyertalk threads where a ticking snafu leads to a passenger downgraded, but I just don't want to show up at O'Hare and have to fight to get my seat.
