I believe that this was posted earlier somewhere. That said, this is nothing new and certainly not isolated to just US based airlines. If I remember correctly, the last time this flared up, it was Cathay who was the target.

The problem is that the potable tanks are not purged and flushed often enough. So bacteria has the perfect place to grow... I suspect if you could get into the tank, you'd prob find orange slime everywhere.

The tanks need to be flushed more than once every few months... As well as the water dispensers.

Personally, this is why I bring my own water bottle.
