Edit: thanks everyone. I just saw the posts above which are consistent with what I was told. Will provide updates. Thankfully this is the trip home so it’s easy to go back to the airport if necessary.

Remember that you can check the status of your bag using the AA app, so you'll know whether the bag made your next flight or not! Good luck!
