It has always puzzled me as why no US carriers have direct flights to at least one destination in Brazil from the West Coast (like LAX or SFO), when there are flights from Detroit and MSP.

If you really mean direct flights, this is meaningless as it's just a connection with the same flight number (despite the change of aircraft) where you earn fewer miles. For a while there was a DTW-GRU nonstop (perhaps seasonal) several days of the week, but IIRC DL has discontinued the flight totally. AFAIK there has never been a nonstop between MSP and Brazil, on any scheduled airline.
