Since this is not purely a US-US itinerary, it shouldn't matter. In other words, cabotage does not come into play with an itinerary starting in AMS. But if you started in IAD, then you would have to have at least one leg on a US carrier (not just a codeshare per the DL website linked by Patal in post #2 ). The cautions posted by others regarding allowing plenty of time since these are separate tickets still apply, of course.
