Or, put slightly differently, I've never asked for an exception to the rules before.... Why should anyone expect an exception to the rules? Is it your position that we're each entitled to one exception?

This. I've done it occasionally, and always found the hotels happy to cooperate. I have used the same approach when I hit the wrong key and end up with the wrong dates, as I have done a couple of times.
