I was pretty sure that was the only route available. However the photographer stated in his intro (3d paragraph): "After my entry over the Enguri river...". That means they entered Abkhazia from Georgia. Apparently connecting roads and bridges are still functioning!!!
Also, Georgia presently offers visa-free entry for anyone in the world. They are not known to bar anyone from entering. Georgia still enjoys and benefits from heavy tourist traffic from Russia. I seriously doubt they would ever pester those tourists with questions whether they had also visited Abkhazia.
