Perhaps this might be the time to step back from our notions of what is and is not acceptable dress and examine where we learned these beliefs and what they represent. Clothing styles and materials have long been used as a way to identify and separate socio-economic groups. Might this be carrying over to today? Businesses are entitled to set dress codes, but to what extent are we as patrons? Are men in shorts any different from women in dresses above the knee? Might there be undiscovered value in dressing in a more relaxed way? Does having other patrons nearby looking like us help us feel more content with who we are and what we believe? No easy answers here, but certainly ones worth considering.
