Moving on from being loyal to UA/Star (or any airline)
Up until now, UA has been the best program out of all the ones I know. And it's primarily because of the sheer number of partners and NAmerica-Jpn options, the greatness of Chase Club Card and the flexible access rules for other Star partner business lounges. So I've made it a point to fly Star and collect UA miles. But the race to the bottom has spiraled out of control and I wonder if it's worth it for me anymore. I'm thinking about cancelling UA Club Card, burning all the miles I have (~300k) before Nov on a completely optional leisure trip to a destination where I can find award seats, switch lounges (I'm at SEA with travels to TYO, HKG, SFO) to Centurion via AMEx Plat, then start focusing more on collecting Hilton points. I'm wondering if most people agree with this or if I'm failing to take something else into consideration.
Some reasons why I've become disillusioned:
-- For me, UA's true devaluation occurred probably 1~1.5yr ago when the partner TPAC saver seat inventory got trimmed significantly. Every summer, I could find round-trip SEA/YVR-TYO nonstop saver seats for my entire family of 4 without fail. Now it appears to me that NH has put a cap of 2 with many blackout dates. As result, the only thing we could find this summer was a 2-stop itinerary via KIX and SFO (I booked that 11months ahead). Looking ahead to next June, the situation is not looking any better. It's become more difficult to use UA miles, and I don't want to constantly do roundout itineraries just to be able to redeem miles and fly for free.
-- UC access policy change effective this Nov.
-- Since DL comes out with negative initiative and UA follows each time, I think it's only a matter of time before UC membership will not entitle you to Star partner lounges and start charging guests.
-- UA award travel change this Nov cannot possibly lead to improvement from customers' standpoint.
-- Right now the best award flight options to Jpn are JAL (only 30k/60k with plenty of availability), but we know that all good things come to an end fast in world of miles. So don't want to jump ship to AS or BA just to be disappointed.
