Had the same experience on a SAN-MSP flight a week or so ago. They came through the cabin and confirmed with those who pre-ordered including myself. Then when bringing out the food they jumped around a lot. Ended up being the last person served. I am a FO so the status idea makes sense. Only thing that was a bummer was they ran out of bagels by the time they got to me. Rest of the flight went off without a hitch besides that.
Not sure what the meals were offered but I have seen cases where they were serving both a hot and cold entree. Sometimes, for various reasons it takes longer to heat up the hot entree so they serve all the cold entrees then serve the hot ones once they are heated to an acceptable temperature.
