I'm in the process of booking my flight home from Rome to Milwaukee. I'm a little concerned about the short 1h 40m connection in Frankfurt on Lufthansa (Likely arriving at gate A40 and departing from gate Z54). In the states, this would be plenty of time, but traveling with my wife and daughter, having never been to FRA and could there be customs/or security delay? Worth the risk or not? Thanks!

You have plenty of time. Z concourse is located above A, so the distances are very manageable. Unlike the US, gates are known only a few minutes prior to arrival, so it is reasonably safe to say that you probably
won't be at A40/Z54!
