While I agree first world problem I would have asked to speak to the manager on duty and made that exact point to see what answer I got. Due to them displaying the sign they have made you to look like your trying to jump the queue when you were simply follwoing their signs!
I agree with your suggestion but the line was already five people deep and I did not want to waste everyone's time by getting a manager. Further, requesting a manager in the crowded check-in lobby would most likely resulting in my check out / points request being honored but caused a dressing down of the attendant.
I will be sending an email to Marriott and seeing what their response is.
