I would have called to purchase the ticket and asked the agent who sold it to me if there was any way to list me.
After an hour call, someone at United was able to work some black magic, and I was able to reroute through IAH and confirm an upgrade (IAH-NRT has PZ space). Lesson learned for future bookings. That's officially my first ever GPU used.
