Enable Wi-Fi calling on your phone and since the island has blanket Wi-Fi coverage if anyone calls your number it will ring you and you won’t be charged the crazy roaming rate.

I have AT&T and unfortunately no coverage in the Maldives so the WiFi calling has been a life saver - this way I can make and receive calls (free too!).
