You can pay cash on board. It will be the same price as at check in unless they are offering special upgrades to fix an oversold Y cabin.
One significant advantage of on board upgrade in either miles or cash is that you don’t pay tax (for example APD for flights departing the UK).
Is the check-in/onboard upgrade offered at any sort of discount? Or just the difference between the paid/miles fare difference?
