No harm in asking the person at the desk, especially if it's looking quiet. I have known extra people to be allowed in on slow periods. As suggested perhaps asking a single passenger as they walk-in. I often guest in a traveller when i am flying solo as i have had it done for me in the past and I appreciate it greatly so it's only good karma to return the favour when i am in the fortunate position to be flying first or business.
