Being a die hard Boeing fan, I must say those two are completely different birds: a regional jet and a proper mid-haul airliner. Both with their own imperfections, I'd still insist in both cases it was not an absolutely critical engineering mistake, but rather cockpit crews' lack of preparedness to operate if something goes wrong. After all there's a reason airline pilots are still one of the highest paid jobs.
