While UA will want to maximize interchangeability, I think you are right that certain routes may have a dedicated fleet. The most likely reasons would be engine type (potential maintenance needs/which stations are best equipped for servicing engine type), or as you note, range.
The 777 fleet will still be separated by engine type, even though configuration will ultimately be the same.
