So I guess I don't understand your question then. If you can get in at 5 PM, go to sleep in an airport hotel (of which these are examples), then wake up and get on your flight the next morning, then that would be the logical thing to do. Why would you get in at 8:40 AM if you don't care to do anything with the time?
The being said, similarly, you note an 11 AM option for your next day flight...does that not exist on the day when you would consider getting in at 8:40 AM? 2:20 would strike me as a comfortable connecting time in Vienna, unless they are out-of-alliance carriers and you are very risk averse.
