Agents will need to transfer you to the promotions desk, as they handle these (but most agents seem to know this).
I have to say that I had a similar good experience with Delta. I had made reservations with the companion pass for my wife and her best friend for a girls weekend. I tore my Achilles a couple weeks before they were supposed to leave and scheduled to have surgery right before their departure date. My wife refused to go with me in my condition, so I called Delta, totally not knowing what to expect, but they switched their tickets and only charged us the difference in the fares. Not even any change fee and the eventual date was actually beyond the original expiration date of the companion pass. I give Delta tons of kudos for their customer service experience in this situation.
